Anne Slattery

In the Wings

Not all of the beauty of dance performance is reserved for the audience in front of the stage; sometimes the most poignant, unguarded moments are appreciated from behind-the-scenes. In this installation of her series In the Wings, Anne Slattery explores the artistry, energy, and emotion of ballet dancers from the vantage point of being offstage, in the wings, where the audience is unable to see.

Bio

Life doesn’t always happen in the expected order. Raised in Santa Monica, CA Anne’s childhood passion for ballet, coupled with a 5’11” height allowed her a unique opportunity immediately after graduating from high school to put college plans on hold and be one of the world-renowned Blue Bell Girls, the original showgirl line that began at the Lido in Paris. A period of time dancing in Japan followed, and it was at this time that the camera became a firm fixture in her life.

Years later, Anne fulfilled the promise she had made to herself back at age eighteen, and graduated from UCLA with a degree in Anthropology. As part of her studies, Anne began exploring the relationship of dance and selfperception, using photography as a form of expression. After graduating, she enrolled in a year-long intensive program at the Los Angeles Center of Photography. Her work can now be seen in conjunction with numerous Los Angeles-based dance companies.
